ST. MARY’S PASS AREA

This area is about 60 miles east of Sonora and is just before the summit crossing of Sonora pass on SR 108.   There is a sign and parking on the north side of SR 108.  The trailhead is adjacent to the parking lot.   A word of caution and that is to remember that you will be starting your hike at over 7000 feet and climbing to an elevation of over 10000 feet.   So if you are unaccustomed to exertion and hiking at altitude take it easy and carry lots of water and some aspirin.   The hike to the top is a fairly steady grade with a few places where you traverse some loose rock fields, but for the most part the trail is an easy walk.   There are several small streams that cross the trail and have interesting flowers on their banks.  Remember that at this elevation the quantity of snowfall and intervening weather can make a significant difference in blooming times.   In a normal weather year the blooming period begins in July and continues until about the middle of August with a few species that are earlier bloomers and several that are relatively later in blooming.
