WESTSIDE TRAIL

This trail is the former Westside railroad right of way that was used to haul logs to the Westside Mill in Tuolumne City until 1960.   Because of this the grade is nearly level with very minor elevation changes for nearly 3 to 4 miles.  Most of the flowering sites on are south facing hillsides overlooking the Tuolumne river canyon with really nice views of the river.   Probably the most spectacular flowering plant on this trail is the silver bush lupine that when it is in full bloom produces a “grape bubble gum” smell that is most pleasant.   The plants can be as tall as an adult and 4 to 6 feet in diameter while covered in lovely bluish plumes of flowers.   This is another trail that you can encounter hikers, bike riders, dog walkers, and horseback riders.   So beware of others on the trail.  There is parking at the trailhead near the intersection of Miramonte and Buchanan road that can accommodate 8 to 10 vehicles  This is a very family friendly trail with picnic tables and many great picture taking locations and lots of wildflowers.  Peak bloom times are from the middle of  April to the end of May.
